This tool, acquired by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt last summer, aims to streamline the grading process, offering potential time-saving benefits for teachers. However, the question arises: is it prudent to delegate essential feedback to a machine?

Writable enables teachers to submit student essays for assessment by ChatGPT, which subsequently provides feedback and insights on the work. The AI-generated feedback undergoes teacher evaluation before being shared with students, ensuring human oversight in the process.

“Enhance feedback effectiveness with AI recommendations delivered to teachers in real-time during the writing process,” Writable assures on its AI website. “Pinpoint areas for improvement with robust, rubric-aligned comments, and optimize grading efficiency with AI-generated preliminary scores.” Moreover, the service offers AI-suggested writing prompts: “Submit any topic to receive instant, tailored prompts that engage students according to your classroom requirements.”

While Writable claims to aid in curriculum development, the functionality remains untested by us. As highlighted on the website, “Once on Writable, leverage AI to design curriculum units around any text, produce essays, multi-part assignments, multiple-choice questions, and more, complete with answer keys.”

Potential Concerns and Benefits of AI-Driven Grading

The reliance on AI for grading is not without its drawbacks. The automated nature of grading may potentially incentivize educators to cut corners, detracting from the value of personalized feedback. Continued reliance on AI could diminish teachers’ familiarity with the subject matter over time. Additionally, the use of cloud-based AI tools might raise privacy concerns for both teachers and students. Furthermore, ChatGPT is not infallible and may potentially misconstrue a student’s work or offer flawed information in teaching materials.

However, proponents argue, as highlighted by Axios, that AI-driven tools like Writable can free up valuable time for teachers, allowing them to concentrate on more creative and impactful teaching methods. The creators of Writable market it as a means to empower educators, purportedly granting them the freedom to allocate additional time to direct student engagement and personalized instruction. Nevertheless, without a comprehensive evaluation, all assertions should be viewed skeptically.

Amid these discussions, parents exhibit mixed sentiments regarding the integration of AI in assessing students’ academic performance. According to a recent poll, nearly half of the respondents are receptive to the concept of AI-supported grading.

As the trend of generative AI infiltrates various domains, it is evident that Writable is not the sole AI-infused grading tool available. Other options include Crowdmark, Gradescope, and EssayGrader, with McGraw Hill reportedly developing similar technology to enhance teacher evaluation and feedback.
