UFC 299: O’Malley Seeks Redemption Against Vera

Almost four years ago, Sean O’Malley suffered the only loss of his career at the hands of Marlon ”Chito” Vera. Tonight, he aims to dispel any doubts surrounding that defeat.

O’Malley (17-1) is set to defend his UFC bantamweight title for the first time against Vera (23-8-1) in the main event of UFC 299 at Kaseya Center in Miami. The pivotal moment occurred in 2020 when O’Malley succumbed to a TKO due to a numbing of the nerve in his right foot from a powerful leg kick by Vera. Acknowledging Vera’s precision, O’Malley, however, contests the legitimacy of his defeat citing the unusual nature of the nerve malfunction.

Both athletes have since enjoyed significant triumphs. O’Malley secured the 135-pound title last August after a stunning knockout victory over long-reigning champion Aljamain Sterling. On the other hand, Vera boasts a 5-2 record, marked by notable victories over former champions Frankie Edgar and Dominick Cruz.

Furthermore, the event features other compelling matchups including veteran lightweight Dustin Poirier’s milestone 30th UFC appearance against rising French star Benoît Saint Denis, Kevin Holland taking on Michael “Venom” Page in Page’s UFC debut, Gilbert Burns aiming to thwart Jack Della Maddalena’s ascent, and Song Yadong squaring off against former bantamweight champion Petr Yan.
