Railroads have historically played a pivotal role in opening up new frontiers for economic development, as seen in the American West during the late 19th century. The United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) envisions a similar transformative impact for the moon through the establishment of a “lunar railroad” network. This ambitious concept, proposed by aerospace giant Northrop Grumman, holds the promise of facilitating serious and sustained economic activities on the lunar surface.

Northrop Grumman’s proposal for a lunar railroad has garnered support from DARPA, with the agency highlighting the potential benefits of such a network for transporting humans, supplies, and resources across the moon. This initiative is part of DARPA’s broader 10-Year Lunar Architecture (LunA-10) Capability Study, aimed at extending humanity’s economic presence into deep space. The selection of Northrop Grumman and 13 other companies for this study underscores the strategic importance of developing lunar infrastructure to enable commercial ventures.

In a press statement, Northrop Grumman representatives emphasized the role of the envisioned lunar railroad in contributing to a burgeoning space economy for the United States and its international partners. The company’s participation in the LunA-10 project signals a significant shift towards fostering economic vibrancy on the moon within the next decade.

Key Objectives of the LunA-10 Study

Northrop Grumman outlined key objectives for its LunA-10 study, which include:

  • Defining the interfaces and resources necessary for constructing a lunar rail network.
  • Identifying potential cost, technological, and logistical risks associated with the project.
  • Developing prototypes, demonstrations, and analyses for the concept design and architecture of a fully operational lunar rail system.
  • Exploring robotics-based construction and operation concepts, encompassing tasks such as grading, track placement, inspection, maintenance, and repair.

While specific funding details were not provided in Northrop Grumman’s recent statement, DARPA had indicated earlier that selected studies under the LunA-10 project could receive awards up to $1,000,000. The collaborative efforts of the chosen companies, including industry giants like SpaceX and Blue Origin, are expected to culminate in a presentation of their findings at the upcoming Lunar Surface Innovation Consortium Spring Meeting followed by the release of final reports in June.
