Haiti Continues to Struggle Amid Political Turmoil and Gang Violence

The situation in Haiti remains dire as violence escalates and political tensions rise. A stark division exists between the political factions vying for power within the ‘transition council’ proposed by CARICOM Caribbean leaders and the gang rebels who hold significant control over Port-au-Prince, with estimates suggesting they influence up to 80% of the capital.

The Rise of Jimmy Chérizier, AKA ‘Barbecue’

At the center of this turmoil is former police officer turned rebel leader Jimmy Chérizier, more commonly known as ‘Barbecue.’ Chérizier, calling for a revolution against the Haitian elite, has openly defied foreign proposals for peace and a clear electoral pathway, challenging traditional politicians collaborating with CARICOM. He accuses them of abandoning Haiti for safer pastures while insisting that those who stayed must reclaim the nation’s destiny.

Al Jazeera reported Chérizier’s defiant stance, stating, “We’re not going to recognize the decisions that CARICOM takes… It’s not just people with guns who’ve damaged the country but the politicians too.”

Despite facing international sanctions and pressure to step down, Chérizier remains resolute in his call for systemic change, warning of a potential civil war if Prime Minister Ariel Henry does not resign.

Escalating Violence and Ongoing Unrest

Following Henry’s resignation, Haiti has seen a surge in looting and street conflicts as political figures jostle for council positions. In contrast, Chérizier’s vision transcends the quest for power; he seeks a complete upheaval of the current socio-political structure. “Now our fight will enter another phase,” he declared to Al Jazeera, “to overthrow the whole system that is controlled by five percent of the population.”

In response to Chérizier’s influence, the Haitian police force initiated an operation in a district of Port-au-Prince under his command, resulting in fatalities among criminal elements.

Daily Mail detailed the police efforts, reporting, “National police units entered the Delmas neighborhood… Several ‘bandits’ were killed, but further specifics were not provided.” This bold move signifies law enforcement’s struggle to regain control amidst the chaos orchestrated by Chérizier’s followers.

Furthermore, recent operations targeted the capital’s primary port, shuttered since early March, in a bid to restore order and authority to the region.
